Independent Reading, otherwise known as self selected reading is a very important component of my reading program. Students are required to read a great deal in 6th grade in order to develop their stamina as well as comprehension. Being that everyone reads at a different level, part of the instructional day is spent reading books that are "just right" or a good fit for the individual student. It is with these texts the reader can implement familiar reading strategies and try out new ones. Online reading is also a major part of our reading program. Websites such as Newsela, ReadTheory, and Tween Tribune allow students to choose from many fiction as well as nonfiction texts at their independent levels.
