This book is about an imaginary time in America when strict controls are placed on the number of children each famiy can produce. Shadow children are those born after a family's allotted two children . The protagonist, Luke, is a shadow child in a farming family. He is content to hide until he turns six, when he begins asking questions. At age twelve he discovers another shadow child and eventually finds his way out of his solitary situation through an unpredictable turn of events.
