3rd Quarter Reading Info for Mrs. Vogel's Class

If you would like to keep abreast of which books your child has tested over, scores , dates of tests, and a whole lot more, you can register to receive up- to -date information via your cell phone or computer at the following link (AR - Renaissance Home Connect). Your child has the username and password for the account. This wonderful tool will send you a message at the very moment your child finishes an AR test with the results, avoiding unnecessary surprises when grades are tabulated at the end of the quarter.

Second semester marks the beginning of our focus on nonfiction.  Students will be expected to read 2 biographies and 1 social studies informational book.  Once these texts are completed, students may read books of their own choosing. If they are in the middle of a book, they may finish it and begin the nonfiction requirements.

I am currently half way through conferencing with students individually to discuss with them the results of their recent STAR test, their growth report and their 3rd quarter AR Goal. We are  reading Where the Red Fern Grows during class in "Theme Teams" and using it as a resource to write a Literary Essay. Students will be allowed to use the points associated with this book toward individual goals. We will also be having a team competition this quarter. Reward - Ice Cream Float Party

A report stating student results, new goal and current zone is being sent home with them after our conference. If we have school tomorrow, I should be done conferencing on Monday. Please read the report,  sign the document and return it to school.

As with the previous quarters, a grade will be given for the percentage of the goal completed and a comprehension average. The scores appear as 50pts. possible for each, so If your child earned a 40/50, the comprehension score for AR books tested over was 80%. The goal completion score is calculated by taking the number of points earned, divided by the total point goal. Then the score is converted to a 100 point scale and divided by two.

This quarter , I have had the boys and girls type their current goal and zone information into the password document in their Google drive for safe keeping. Please ask to see this as well as the report I sent home to be signed.

I would be happy to speak with anyone who has questions regarding their child's progress in reading. Literacy is the most important focus of the 6th grade experience. It can make or break your child's future success, and I take that very seriously.

Thank you for reading to the very end of this lengthy text. I truly appreciate the support and partnership I have felt this year from parents and guardians.

                                                                     Most sincerely,

                                                                                  Mrs. Vogel

P.S. Tell your child you read this blog and have them see me for a piece of Google gum.
