Social Studies -
Ola! Our Mexico Unit is complete, and I think the kids learned a lot and had fun doing it. Follow the link if you would like to see the pictures from our fiesta and the beautiful Aztec and Maya masks they made. If your child was not able to bring in materials for this project and used the items I bought, please send in $1or $2 to cover the cost.
We will be moving on to Ch. 1 Ancient Civilizations briefly to pick up additional information about the early groups of Native Americans. No final test will be given over this material. Students will be expected to complete notes in class and take quizzes for each section on Edmodo. All grades are up to date at this time. Students are asked to check HAC each morning before school starts rather than roaming the halls, so they can follow up on missing work during homeroom.
SS Grades -
In an effort to help students recover from a failing grade, I will be entering a "U" for "unfinished" if an assignment is not turned in. This will automatically enter half the points or a 50% which is still failing, but recoverable if the students does better on subsequent assignments. A "0" entered in to an average is extremely detrimental to student's grade and often causes a feeling of hopelessness and frustration. My goal is to be as fair as possible and encourage my students to do the work and learn the material, not punish them. It is for this reason that I also accept test corrections and promote retakes on tests.
Reading/Writing (Vogel only)
Students will begin book clubs this week which will allow them to choose from a group of texts and work with a group of readers who are mutually interested in the same book. All books and assignments must be finished by the April 9th (end of 3rd Quarter). Requirements for the clubs will include a character analysis, a story element analysis, and a final essay based on the essential question, "How does the main character change throughout the story?". Students may use their book club books for AR points.
Reminders-
1. Mud Hens persmission slip and $14 due ASAP
2. (Vogel only) AR Parent Signature for Home Connect Due
3. Students who are not 3/4 of the way to their AR goals will recieve Lunch Bunch (lunch penalty hall) passes to read while they eat in our classrooms on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.
Thank you for reading! Parents, tell your child to see me for Google Gum if you have read to the end of this blog.
