Dear Parents/Guardians,
We will have a two man team format in sixth grade this year for the core content areas. Mrs. Regnier will teach Math, Science and Social Studies and I will be teaching Social Studies, Reading and Writing . Students will have their homeroom teachers for Social Studies.
The accompanying outline should provide you with important information regarding our classes. Throughout the year, we will do our best to keep you informed (via HAC, Schoology, Remind, Twitter, e-mail and my website) of activities in our classrooms. The most effective way to contact me us is via e-mail if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Vogel and Mrs. Regnier
1. What Is Expected From 6th Grade Students.
a. Be productive. Be prepared. Be polite. (B3P)
b. Come to school ready to learn. (Computer battery charged, body rested, nourished, hydrated, and properly clothed.)
c. Organizational skills and becoming more responsible for one’s own learning will be stressed.
d. Raise your hand before you speak.
e. Remember your manners. “Please,” “Thank you,” “Excuse me,” and “May I,” will go a long way in our classes.
f. Never lie. If a mistake is made, admit it right away. It is very important for us to be able to trust you.
2. Restroom Breaks
a. You may go as soon as you enter school without asking our permission. You must be in your seat by 7:30 a.m. ( 3 tardies = 1 detention)
b. Students must sign themselves out on the clipboard by the door before traveling anywhere outside of the classroom. Passes are required for destinations other than the restroom.(school policy)
d. All other personal needs should be handled during the 5 minute change over between classes. This is not a time to socialize. It is provided for you to get organized and use the restroom.
3. Supplemental Reading Material for Mrs. Vogel’s Class
a. There is a classroom library filled with books and magazines. I ask that you have an A.R. book in your possession at all times. There is a minimum of ½ hour of self-selected reading in class and 15 minutes at home every day, so be prepared.
b. Ensuring your child makes at least one year’s growth based on their independent reading level is paramount. 6th grade will be the last year your child receives reading and writing instruction in two separate classes. These two subjects will be combined into one 50 minute period in 7th – 12th grade.
c. Scholastic book catalogs will be sent home each month. If you choose to order, you may do so online and use my classroom code (K686W). Each order earns us points and free books for our classroom library. This program along with bake sales and a read-a-thon (March) allows me to keep new reading material in your children’s hands as well as replace books that are lost or not returned. Books in my classroom library have been paid for out of my pocket and not by the district , so please encourage your child to take care of them. All books must be carried in a plastic baggy.
4. Assignments
a. Organization - All assignments are written on the board and/or posted on Schoology when Chromebooks are in use. It is the student’s responsibility to check and review the information . In the event no homework is listed, reading is to be completed. 15 minutes nightly is standard. If a student uses homeroom time wisely, many nights are free of paper/pencil assignments and should be used for Reading, Math and studying for Science and Soc. Studies.
b. Educational Research- We attempt to balance the load by working cooperatively with scheduling tests and projects but conflicts do occasionally occur. If your child is having difficulty getting work done in this amount of time, please notify us. We strive to have students complete all work in class with supervision so family time can be enjoyed. We are parents as well as teachers and want to maintain a healthy balance for everyone.
c. Paper Heading – First and last name, date, and description must be noted clearly on all assignments. Please put your student number (assigned in each class based on alpha order of students) in the UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER in order for credit to be received.
d. Absent Work – It is the student’s responsibility to check on Schoology to see what was missed. Handouts (if hard copies were used) can be obtained from the Absent Work tray on the board. Please understand that some assignments cannot be made up due to the interactive nature of activities. In this case, the assignment will be excused (X on HAC) or a substitute provided if possible. Work that is to be returned past the original due date should be submitted electronically via Gmail. Past due assignments are not entered into Schoology until the weekend. I am very flexible in the event of emergencies or rare occurrences of tardiness. My goal if for students to complete the work to learn the material, not look for opportunities to say, "Gotcha!"
e. Missing Work – A ZAP (Zeros Aren’t Permitted) pass will be issued in the event a student develops a pattern of not turning in assignments. If this happens, parents are notified and students are required to stay after school to complete missing work. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are the three days which this occurs. The ZAP room will be announced over the p.a. so students know where to attend.
5. Behavior
a. Penalty Halls - Penalty halls are assigned for inappropriate behavior but much dialogue is had in class prior to this consequence. Friday penalty halls are used (3hrs long) in chronic cases. Lunch penalty halls, completed in my classroom or the office are assigned in the event an after school penalty hall is not appropriate or possible. I really try to work with the students to make the adjustment to the junior high by speaking with them prior to giving penalty halls. Know that if a penalty hall is given, it is due to chronic violation of the rules. Lapses in judgement are easily forgiven. Harmful behavior will result in a consequence.
