B3P - (Be Present, Prepared, and Polite) Students are required to gather all materials from their lockers and be in their seats prior to the bell ringing. A tardy is marked on HAC if this doesn't occur. Excessive absenteeism and or tardiness will result in a phone call home, a penalty hall, or a letter from the truancy officer. Parents will be notified if a child comes to class unprepared on a regular basis. Students are required to have an A.R. book with them at all times. I try to pack 45- 60 minutes of independent reading into our day. This can only happen if we are prepared to pull out a book and read whenever there is down time. These minutes are not filler, but the most valuable time spent in school.
Electives/Special Areas- 6th graders will have an elective class each day. Art, music (band, orchestra or choir), physical education, tech. ed. and drama are the classes students attend for a quarter. Students who are in orchestra will have gym one day during the week instead of orchestra. Mr. Thomas will inform you which day you are to attend gym. Students who have gym are required to wear red, gray or white gym shorts and t-shirts. Mrs. Ewing/Mr. Vergiels/Mr. Cierkerski will give you more specifics the first week of gym class. Chromebooks are not to be taken to gym class. Please remember to bring deodorant to put on after p.e. Preteen bodies in hot classrooms are not pleasant for anyone.
Help - Checklists are taped inside the students' lockers as reminders of what is needed for each class. We have a limited amount of space in classrooms and hallways so backpacks and "swag bags" are to be kept in lockers. Teachers are in the hallways to supervise during breaks and will assist in getting students to classrooms. Going downstairs to electives for the first week can be a bit scary for some students, so I will be walking with you to make sure you find your way. Most new broncos are able to maneuver throughout the building independently after the first couple of days. If you are still struggling, just let me know and I'd be happy to partner you with someone who is going to the same class.
Chromebook Issues - Any problems your child may have related to the hardware or connectivity are to be reported to the helpdesk via an email link . This link and phone number is located on the Chromebook splash page for easy access. All issues must be catalogued so the district can keep track of the tech team workload and make sure they are properly manned. We encourage students to take the initiative to advocate for themselves rather than having a parent contact the teacher . This helps the child begin to develop independence and expedites the process of fixing the issue.
5 Minute Transitions - A five minute break is typically given between all classes with the exception of reading and writing. (Classes travel as a group for Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. )This time is to be used to go to lockers, the restroom and get drinks. Many students misuse this time by chatting with friends and forget needed materials to participate successfully in class. Exiting the classroom for forgotten items poses a distraction to everyone and creates a situation where students are unable to participate in class successfully. We will be flexible in the beginning of the school year as we understand there are many new things to keep track of.
Schoology (Very similar to Edmodo) - Assignments are posted on the board and on Schoology which is the platform used in 6th-12th grade to communicate with our students and share assignments. Students should show parents their "updates feed" to keep informed of what is due the next day in class.
Homeroom - Students move as individuals during electives (specials) and sometimes home- room. Homeroom, otherwise known as homebase, is a time during the day when students begin homework, read independently for Accelerated Reader, or get individual assistance or small group intervention from teachers. This is also the time when students pick up make-up work due to an absence. (Absent Work tray is located on the board. Return all work to the teacher when done. Late work is not typically entered until the weekend.) Students with an IEP receive special services during homeroom time (i.e. speech, social work, counseling, etc.)
